Writing: Think about the story "High! Fly Guy.  We are going to be writing an opinion paragraph answering the question "Is Fly Guy a good pet?"

After reviewing the Writing Model, decide if you think Fly Guy is a good pet and then write at least four reasons why you think he is or is not. This is a pre-write, so just write ideas, not sentences.

Writing Model

Topic, Detail, and Closing Sentence

The topic sentence tells your opinion, or what you think.

Detail sentences give reasons and examples.

The closing sentence retells your opinion using different words.

A Dog for Bones

Bones the detective should be allowed to have Curly the dog. One reason is Curly likes Bones. Curly wags his curly tail when he sees him. Another reason is Curly is a great detective! He is a detective because he knows how to follow clues to find people. Curly can help Bones follow the clues. I think Bones the detective needs Curly the dog.

Talk About It

1. What kind of writing is this? How do you know?

2. What are the jobs of the topic sentence and the closing sentence?

Instead, the author wrote, "They went to a large meadow where the wind was strong." Not only does this sound better, but it also gives the reader more information and is more interesting.

Assignment

Hi everyone. I found a math website that I would like the children to try. It's called Happy Numbers. With it, I can look at the student's progress. Please let me know what you think.

Dear Parents,

Due to the school closure, our class has an option to learn math online using Happy Numbers. It’s a web-based PK-5 math tool that moves children along at their own pace based on responses and provides helpful feedback after any errors. Although the exercises are all fun, interactive, and visually appealing, don’t be fooled! Your child will be gaining valuable practice in important math skills.

Follow these simple steps to use Happy Numbers at home:
1. Go to HappyNumbers.com
2. Click the “I’m a Student” button
3. Enter our class number (351620)
4. Select your child’s name from the class list
5. Enter your child’s password (see attached PDF)

The first task for your child is to complete a 20-question Placement Test to determine their appropriate starting point in the Happy Numbers curriculum. It’s recommended to use Happy Numbers 15-20 minutes a day, up to 3-5 times a week.

If you have any questions regarding Happy Numbers use, please contact: [email protected]

Educationally yours,

Happy Numbers Team
